The gospel

Sins taken away

— Salvation is Finished —

Friend, I want to say this the way I would say it across the kitchen table, with the Bible open between us.

Jesus took sins away. That is the gospel I live in now. Not that He draped a cloth over them for a season. Not that we keep climbing back up the hill to plead for the same pardon. One sacrifice for sins, for all time. He sat down. The work is finished.

I used to treat forgiveness like a leaky bucket — fill it, watch it empty, ask again. The book of Hebrews would not let me stay there. One offering. Perfected forever. Sins and iniquities remembered no more.

Remission is not a religious mood. It is blood. The Lamb of God takes away the sin of the world. The handwriting against us is blotted out. Redemption is through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

Covering

Sins still there

The old sacrifices covered. Year after year the same blood was brought, because the sins remained under the cloth. A covering is temporary. It has to be repeated.

Remission

Sins taken away

Remission is removal. Jesus took sins away once for all by His blood. Hebrews 10:12-14: one sacrifice for sins for ever, then He sat down. Perfected forever.

“But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God… For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.”
Hebrews 10:12–14
“And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.”
Hebrews 10:17
“Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins.”
Acts 13:38
“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
John 1:29
“And you, being dead in your sins… hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us.”
Colossians 2:13–14
“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”
Ephesians 1:7
